According to GatorZone…
Three individual national champions and five national championship races at the 2009 NCAA Championship meet highlighted one of the most successful seasons in recent University of Florida swimming and diving history. Among Florida’s national champions, Bradley Ally (200 IM), Shaune Fraser (200 free & 200 fly) and SEC Female Swimmer of the Year Gemma Spofforth (100 & 200 backstroke), two swimmers, Fraser and Spofforth, return to lead the Gators on their quest for another victorious run in 2009-10.
While Florida’s talent in the swimming pool and on the diving boards carried the lady Gators to an SEC Championship and the men to a fifth-place NCAA showing, the hard work didn’t stop at poolside. Thirty-one Gators were named to the 2009 SEC Academic Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the academic year. Additionally, the Gators bid farewell to 12 graduates who took part in commencement ceremonies the first weekend in May. Six former Florida men and six former Lady Gators earned their undergraduate degrees from UF, among them 2008 U.S. Olympic bronze medalist Caroline Burckle.

Thanks to the Fine Reporting of AP’s Jeff Latzke who reports Monday night results of Florida Women vs. Washington Women for a chance as National SoftBall Champions. According to AP’s Jeff Latzke:
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Jenn Salling hit a two-run single that turned into a whole lot more as Washington routed top-seeded Florida 8-0 Monday night in Game 1 of the Women’s College World Series finals.
Salling’s single brought in four runs when catcher Kristina Hilbreth tried to catch a runner at second. Her throw sailed into center field.
Morgan Stuart added a two-run double in the fifth inning as the Huskies (50-12) had a surprising offensive outburst against Stacey Nelson, the nation’s stingiest pitcher with an 0.48 ERA. Nelson (41-4) had consecutive shutouts to open the World Series.
Danielle Lawrie (41-8) threw a two-hitter to set a new Washington record with her 41st career shutout. Jennifer Spediacci, who pitched the Huskies to their last championship appearance in 1999, held the old record with 40.
Game 2 of the best-of-three series is Tuesday night…”

No. 1 Softball Heads to the WCWS with a Doubleheader Defeat of No. 14 California
The No. 1/1 Florida softball team stamped its second-consecutive trip to Oklahoma City for the Women’s College World Series Sunday at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium, defeating the No. 14/16 Cal Golden Bears, 2-0, and 2-1, to improve to 60-3 overall on the season. Florida emerged out of the Gainesville Super Regional with its 59th and 60th wins, marking the second time in program history the Gators recorded a 60-win season.
Florida senior pitcher Stacey Nelson (Los Alamitos, Calif.) recorded the two wins, beating Cal in both games for the second straight year. She tallied her 10th double-digit strikeout game of the season, sending 13 Cal batters to the bench in the first game of the doubleheader. She added six more in game two. The righty (39-3) gave up only six hits total on the day and did not allow a walk for the 12th and 13th times this season.
To start game one, sophomore Aja Paculba (Wildomar, Fla.) slammed her fourth lead-off home run of the season over the left-field fence after battling Marissa Drewerey (24-11) for 13 pitches. The second baseman’s ninth bomb of the season gave the Gators a 1-0 lead.
After allowing a single to right field, Nelson got Cal’s next three batters swinging in the second to carry Florida to the bottom of the inning unscathed. The Gators kept the momentum up, and following a single to center and two sacrifice bunts by sophomore Tiffany DeFelice (Coral Springs, Fla.) and senior Kim Waleszonia (Fontana, Calif.), sophomore Megan Bush (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) scored on a wild pitch, giving the Gators a 2-0 lead.
The Gators closed out the game with three consecutive strikeouts from Nelson after Cal’s Taylor Kelly had a lead-off base hit.
Sophomore Stephanie Brombacher (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) got the start in game two and pitched the first two innings. The righty struck out one and allowed two hits and an unearned run.
The Golden Bears scored first with a two-out unearned run after Shannon Thomas reached base on a fielder’s choice and then stole second. Thomas advanced to third on senior Gina Leomiti’s groundout to shortstop and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Bush.
The Gators responded with two runs in the top of the third to take the lead. Bush and DeFelice put runners on first and second with a hit by pitch and walk, respectively. Sophomore Ami Austin (Ormond Beach, Fla.) came in to pinch run for Bush. Waleszonia laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move both Gators into scoring position. Paculba came through with a double to left center to give UF a 2-1 lead.
Nelson came in in relief with the leadoff runner on second and no outs in the third. She retired the side with two Ks and a groundout.
The Bears threatened in the sixth by putting runners on first and second with two straight singles and no outs. Nelson forced Sanoe Kekuna to ground back to the mound and the Gators executed a 1-5-3 double play. Elia Reid popped out to end the inning and keep the UF lead.
Although the Gators did not add to their lead, Florida’s defense and Nelson’s pitching held the one-run advantage. The senior got the final Cal batter on a swinging strikeout to send UF to the WCWS. Valerie Arioto (14-9) allowed four hits, two earned runs and struck out six in the loss.
Florida will take on nine-seed Arizona on Thursday, May 28 at 9 p.m. Fans can watch the game live on ESPN or espn360.com and can listen on WRUF (am850.com).

Saturday’s game time is set for 8 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN. The first game on Sunday will be played at 6 p.m. and if necessary, the second game is set for 8 p.m. Both will be televised on ESPN2. All three games will be available on ESPN360.com.
Tickets packages, which include all sessions (one day is one session), will cost $15 for adults and $10 for senior citizens and children 12 and under. Single session tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students. The first 250 students with Gator One IDs will get in for free. Fans will not be allowed to stand outside the fence in right field. Parking will be available in the Harn Museum and Southwest Rec lots on Hull Road.
The Gators took on the Bears in last year’s Super Regionals as well. UF won the first two games, both by 4-2 scores. The second game went nine innings, as the Gator bats came alive in extras. Current sophomore Megan Bush’s (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) lead-off home run and three consecutive hits in the top of the inning put the Gators on top. Their strong defensive kept Cal off the board and Florida moved on to its first-ever WCWS appearance.
Florida, the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament, went 3-0 in the Gainesville Regional, beating Florida A&M, Texas A&M and Lehigh by a combined score of 28-1. California came out of the Tallahassee Regional, defeating Mississippi State and Oklahoma State twice, also tallying an undefeated record.

To the Gator Nation,
As Chairman of the 2009 International Gator Day, I invite you to join me in becoming involved in this great Gator tradition. Now in its 11th year, International Gator Day continues to be the most visible and meaningful community service project associated with the Gator Club® Network.
Each May, thousands of Gator alumni and friends around the world volunteer time and good will to make a difference in their local communities. Last year, 64 clubs partnered with 54 non-profit agencies in efforts to make a positive impact in their respective hometowns. It is this mission of service and dedication that personally draws me to the cause of helping those less fortunate. While we share a common bond of being part of the University of Florida family, we share an even greater commitment to the betterment of society.
I urge you to participate in your local Gator Club’s® project and continue to serve your community throughout the year on behalf of the spirit of the Gator Nation.
Go Gators!
